A split sheet is a legal document that contains a list of names belonging to songwriters and their associated individual share(s) in the royalties generated by a song. Each songwriter listed in the document has to append their signature in order for the document to be considered legal or legally binding.
Split sheets are usually drafted in the form of a written contract document or in a spreadsheet format. According to experts, it is advisable to draft your split sheets in a written contract format to make it easy to accommodate signatures since that is the only thing that makes it a valid document.
Split sheets are an essential part of the music industry because it is undeniable proof of the portion of royalties that must be paid to each songwriter.
